University of Liberia Commences Competency-Based MRV for Climate Action Curriculum
February 5, 2025
The University of Liberia is proud to announce the commencement of its innovative and competency-based MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) for Climate Action Curriculum. This groundbreaking program, supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) through NovaSphere (a Canadian Corporation), marks a significant milestone in advancing climate education in Liberia and the region.
Following approvals from the Academic Coordination Committee and the Faculty Senate in April 2024, the curriculum is now set to prepare students with the skills and knowledge necessary to address the pressing challenges of climate change. The inaugural cohort includes enthusiastic students, vetted from a pool of over 50 applicants, who will benefit from a unique blend of theoretical insights and practical, hands-on training.
“This program is designed to equip students with job-ready skills to lead climate action initiatives,” said Dr. Charles Asumana Sr., project lead for this transformative pilot, titled, ‘Development and Launch of a Permanent MRV Curriculum for Tertiary Education’. “It reflects the University of Liberia’s commitment to fostering sustainability and addressing global climate challenges through education.”
The curriculum is hosted at the newly refurbished National University Climate Action Laboratory (NUCAL) on the Capitol Hill Campus of the University of Liberia. The program is using a competency-based approach rather than a knowledge-based approach, ensuring graduates are prepared to meet the demands of the job market.
The University of Liberia invites stakeholders, partners, and the public to join in celebrating this achievement and supporting the program’s success. The university expresses tremendous thanks to the Government and People of Canada for the financial and technical support.
