Liberia Climate Change Negotiations
Liberia is expanding access to clean and affordable energy through solar electrification, off-grid solutions, and sustainable biomass alternatives. With support from global climate partners, the country is laying the groundwork for energy access in rural areas while reducing reliance on fossil fuels and charcoal.
This project, funded by the World Bank under the Liberia Electricity Sector Strengthening and Access Project (LESSAP), supports solar-powered mini-grids and standalone systems in underserved areas. It expands clean energy access while boosting local economic activity.
Implemented within REDD+ pilot zones, this initiative promotes alternatives to charcoal and firewood through clean cooking technologies and solar distribution programs. It reduces pressure on forests while improving indoor air quality.
Supported by international partners, this pilot promotes improved charcoal kilns, sustainable woodlot management, and transition to cleaner fuels. It focuses on peri-urban areas where demand for biomass energy remains high.
